Craft: Make Sand?!? + My Mantel Redo

So I've been debating buying sand at the store. I really wanted some for my mantel redo, but I couldn't bring myself to buy sand, because I live an hour from the beach. I know it's only $3, but it's sand! Yeah, just couldn't. So I had an idea:

Yup, make our own sand. I got the salt, soy sauce [in the bear jar lol], a glass jar, & a chopstick to stir with. Now originally I just thought the soy sauce would make it a tan color, but it did more! I put some salt in there, as much as I needed. Then I added a couple drops of soy sauce. It makes the salt clump together so that's why you need the chopsticks or the end of a spatula. So start stirring until it's all mixed up and has the, wait for it, consistency of sand!

Here's a inside view of what it looks like.

Looks like sand, huh?

Yup! I'm awesome like that!

On to my mantel redo. Ignore the ugly time and lame way the mantel looks like a box!

Isn't she pretty? The frame, stand, jars on the left, angel, and that white box all came from the thrift store. The rest of the stuff was given to me. I think all together I did this for $5. I can't wait to redo this mantel as it get my saw lol. See that frame up there? That's our family rules that I made! So what did you think? Ready to make some sand?

  1. That really does look like sand! I never would have thought of this.

Since we live near the beach, getting real sand is never a problem. Enough of it gets into the car once the kids pile in for the trip home, LOL.
